Join the Chamber Orchestra for Improvisionaries: a season -long exploration of the art of improvisation. The Chamber Orchestra , in partnership with the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz, will celebrate this landmark season with a variety of programs exploring the art of improvisation spanning the 17 th through 21 st centuries. It will illuminate the immensely varied and colorful musical trajectory which supplied an essential framework to the birth of jazz, as well as the myriad links between jazz and classical music. The season will culminate with the premiere of a new work by COP’s Steven R. Gerber Composer-in Residence, Adam Vidiksis featuring players from the Clef Club.

Each year, the public is invited to nominate the musicians(s) it feels “best represent the ideal musicians who have made significant contributions to the legacy of jazz in the city of Philadelphia.”

Tenor Madness is a musical ensemble formed through the instigation of the Philadelphia Jazz project for a Pop Up concert at the Reading Terminal Market in 2014. Since then the ensemble has performed several times including at last year’s Coltrane At 90 Celebration. The group has been led by veteran saxophonist and bandleader, Sam Reed and has featured a who's’ who of Philadelphia area saxophonists, including Charles Cunningham, Tim Price, Elliott Levin, Carl Grubbs, Korey Riker, Yesseh Ali, Michael Pedicin, Larry McKenna, Gilberto Cruz, Pete Chavez, and Julian Pressley. The name Tenor Madness is a tribute to the 1956 Sonny Rollins recording of the same name that is most notable as being the only known recording featuring both saxophone giants, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane.

Philadelphia Jazz Project Presents Diva Nation! All Women All Jazz Vocal Project featuring Monnette Sudler, Sherry Wilson Butler, and Haley Joyner
The Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts has entered into a collaborative partnership with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia for 2017-2018. This relationship will consist of a series of workshops and performances which will involve composers and musicians from both organizations. The programs will take place throughout the year at the Philadelphia Clef Club site on the Avenue of the Arts.
