SUMMARY:Film Series: Thunder Soul
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Mark Landesman\, Thunder Soul tells the inspired true story of Kashmere (Texas) High School’s band leader Conrad “Prof” Johnson. The film centers around 2008\, when alumni from Prof’s legendary band decide to reunite the bands past members to perform a reunion concert for their beloved teacher before he retires. The film incorporates current interviews of Prof and his students along with clips from the 1974 documentary titled Prof & The Band. \nRuntime: 88 min

SUMMARY:Film Series: The Case of the Three Sided Dream
DESCRIPTION:Adam Kahan expertly portrays the life of superb musician\, Rahsaan Roland Kirk in his documentary The Case of the Three Sided Dream. Kirk was blinded in his early childhood yet was keenly aware of racism and other injustices of American society that surrounded him. He constantly spoke out on such injustices in him many interviews\, which caused viewers to see him negatively and formed impediments to his “commercial” viability. As a young man\, he discovered the ability to play multiple reed instruments simultaneously\, which also created disdain and critique as most viewers dismissed him as a “circus sideshow act.” Kirk was always fond of saying\, “If life hands you lemons\, make lemonade.” This film is a great story of the man who gave and gave of himself without being truly appreciated\, until\, his candle burned out at the age of 42. “Like a properly mixed batch of lemonade\,” this film masterfully “blends the bitter with the sweet.” \nRuntime:107 min

SUMMARY:Film Series: THE JAZZ LOFT
DESCRIPTION:In the 1950s\, dozens of jazz musicians jam night after night in a dilapidated New York loft building\, not realizing they are all being captured in sound and pictures by acclaimed LIFE Magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith\, who lives in the loft space next door. Thelonious Monk stops by to rehearse; drummer Ronnie Free gets hooked on hard drugs; Smith begins to tape-record his own phone calls; the ’50s give way to the ’60s. In a layering of interviews\, vignettes and powerful melodies from famed musicians\, director and WNYC producer Sara Fishko (Fishko Files) recreates the vibrant culture of New York’s mid-century jazz era for the modern day viewer\, resurrecting the voices captured in each of Smith’s evocative photographs.
