His deeply interactive\, powerfully expressive musical language is indebted to the composer-pianist lineage from Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk to Alice Coltrane and Geri Allen\, the creative music movement of the 60s and 70s\, and rhythmic traditions of South Asia and West Africa. As MinnPost recently observed\, “twining composition and improvisation is rightfully his most celebrated métier.” He has released twenty-six widely praised albums; received three Grammy nominations\, numerous national and international prizes\, and a MacArthur Fellowship; composed for orchestras\, soloists\, and chamber ensembles; and collaborated with poets\, filmmakers\, choreographers\, and music-makers from across the planet. But Iyer’s artistry finds perhaps its purest expression in his most celebrated group\, the Vijay Iyer Trio\, praised by NPR as “truly astonishing” and by The New York Times as “one of the best bands in jazz.”  \n  \nOver the years this pivotal ensemble has nurtured a remarkable roster of now-revered young musicians. The first longstanding iteration of Iyer’s trio\, featuring bassist Stephan Crump and wunderkind drummer Marcus Gilmore\, became one of the definitive ensembles of the 2010s. Their three groundbreaking albums – Historicity (ACT\, 2009)\, Accelerando (ACT\, 2012)\, and Break Stuff (ECM\, 2015)\, received universal acclaim in the jazz and mainstream press\, each one winning multiple awards for best album\, best jazz group\, and best pianist\, and cementing a place for Iyer in the modern musical firmament. Their repertoire juxtaposed memorable covers of “Galang\,” “Human Nature\,” and “The Star of a Story” with Iyer’s intricate\, soulful compositions. \n  \nIn 2021\, an all-star incarnation of Iyer’s trio with bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Tyshawn Sorey released Uneasy (ECM)\, which was named one of the best jazz albums of 2021 by Pitchfork\, The New Yorker\, NPR\, the Boston Globe\, and numerous other publications. Turre was born to Mexican-American parents and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area where he absorbed daily doses of mariachi\, blues and jazz. While attending Sacramento State University\, he joined the Escovedo Brothers salsa band\, which began his career-long involvement with that genre. \nIn 1972 Steve Turre’s career picked up momentum when Ray Charles hired him to go on tour. A year later Turre’s mentor Woody Shaw brought him into Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. After his tenure with Blakey\, Turre went on to work with a diverse list of musicians from the jazz\, Latin\, and pop worlds\, including Dizzy Gillespie\, McCoy Tyner\, J.J. Johnson\, Herbie Hancock\, Lester Bowie\, Tito Puente\, Mongo Santamaria\, Van Morrison\, Pharoah Sanders\, Horace Silver\, Max Roach\, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The latter introduced hum to the seashell as an instrument. Soon after that\, while touring in Mexico City with Woody Shaw\, Turre’s relatives informed him that his ancestors similarly played the shells. Since then\, Turre has incorporated seashells into his diverse musical style. \nIn addition to performing as a member of the Saturday Night Live Band since 1984\, Turre leads several different ensembles. Sanctified Shells utilizes the seashell in a larger context\, transforming his horn section into a “shell choir”. Turre’s Spring 1999 Verve release\, Lotus Flower\, showcases his Sextet With Strings. The recording explores many great standards and original compositions arranged by Turre for a unique instrumentation of trombone and shells\, violin\, cello\, piano\, bass and drums. Turre’s quartet and quintet provide a setting based in tradition and stretching the limits conceptually and stylistically. In the Summer of 2000\, Telarc released In The Spur of the Moment. Forged from his Memphis\, (TN) gospel roots. The 80’s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene––especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nAn ordained minister\, Kirk has earned a Masters of Art in Religion. It’s in this spirit that he serves his community in various ways when his touring schedule allows. Helen went on to become part of the inaugural class of the Thelonious Monk Institute (now the Herbie Hancock Institute) at the New England Conservatory of Music. \nAs a classical-turned-jazz artist\, one of the things I have come to love the most about this American art form is its generous\, communal heart: this is music made together\, played together\, and enjoyed together. Tenor legend Jimmy Heath told me (during my studies at the then Monk Institute) the jazz bandstand exemplified true democracy\, where the musicians each had a role to play\, everyone got a chance to shine and have their say\, but in the end they create something greater together than they could on their own. After the prolonged isolation of the pandemic\, getting to play (and hang!) with beloved colleagues and tour again has been a joy and revelation: as Maestro Heath taught me\, we need one another. May we take this message out into the jazz venues of our nation\, and the world. \nHelen Sung newest album Quartet+ (Sunnyside Records)\, garnered a 4.5 star DownBeat review and inclusion in its “Best of 2021 Albums” list\, and a JazzTimes cover story (January 2022 issue)\, while previous releases Sung With Words (Stricker Street)\, a collaborative project with renowned poet Dana Gioia\, and Anthem For A New Day (Concord Jazz) topped the jazz charts. He actively performs both Jazz and classical music and has performed around the US and Canada at such venues as Carnegie Hall\, the Kimmel Center\, the Jazz Standard and the Blue Note\, as well as in Europe and Asia. His compositions have been presented throughout the US and Europe. A member of the faculty at Temple University’s Esther Boyer College of Music\, Lucas holds a BM in Jazz Performance from Temple University and a MM in Organ Performance from Westminster Choir College.   \nKnown to many throughout the Jazz world as an organist\, Lucas has been a member of saxophone legend Bootsie Barnes’ organ trio since the age of 21. Since that time\, he has performed with such Jazz artists as Pat Martino\, Eric Alexander\, Terell Stafford\, and Gerald Veasley\, and is one of Joey DeFrancesco’s last touring band members.  He was awarded the Clef Club Jazz Award in 2014 in recognition of his contributions as an organist in Philadelphia. Lucas was a member of the Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour (PennPAT) artist roster as a member of the group Three Blind Mice\, with Victor North and Wayne Smith Jr. Lucas has also performed with Opera Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Orchestra.   \n Anwar Marshall  \n Drummer\, multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, music lover\, and producer\, Anwar’s ears and skill have been cultivated through exposure\, experience\, practice\, and the academy. His roots in Black music were planted in Philadelphia\, where he was born. Always eager to create\, Anwar began playing drums at an early age. With a culture as vibrant as Philadelphia’s\, there’s a multitude of musical directions to travel. As it were\, Anwar branches from the tree of great musicians and producers from Philadelphia’s iconic Soul\, Jazz\, and R&B sounds. His work as a sideman has earned him 2 Grammy nominations as well as the opportunity to travel across the world. Anwar is one of Joey DeFrancesco’s last touring band members. Currently performing with his own band and touring internationally with Marcus Miller.  \n Jerry Weldon   \n Internationally renowned veteran sax man Jerry Weldon\, has been a player on the jazz scene for more than 45 years. With eight CD’s as a leader and more sideman sides than even he can count…or remember\, this native New Yorker’s performance/recording résumé reflects his venerable tenor tenure and reads like a virtual “Who’s Who of Jazz.” \nAfter graduating from Rutgers University Jazz Studies Program in 1981\, Jerry joined the legendary Lionel Hampton Orchestra and continued his association with Hamp into the new millennium. Next came a long\, rewarding stint with master organist Jack McDuff & his “Heatin’ System.” Additionally Jerry has worked with organists Jimmy McGriff\, Joey DeFrancesco\, Bobby Forrester\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, and Mel Rhyne\, trombone great Al Grey\, piano giants George Cables and Cedar Walton\, drum legends Roy Haynes and Jimmy Cobb as well as guitarist/singer George Benson\, guitarist Earl Klugh\, bassist Keter Betts\, singer Mel Tormé and a host of other legendary musicians. \nIn 1990\, Jerry became a charter member and featured soloist with Harry Connick Jr.’s newly formed big band. Carnell Professor of Jazz Terell Stafford\, the Temple University Jazz Band (TUJB) performs on Temple’s main campus and throughout the greater Philadelphia region\, and hosts the annual Essentially Ellington Eastern Regional High School Jazz Band Festival. Other festival appearances include the Mellon/PSFS Jazz Festival\, International Association of Jazz Educators Conferences\, the East Coast Jazz Festival\, the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conferences\, and the Detroit International Jazz Festival. The TUJB is also a frequent award winner at the annual Villanova Jazz Festival.  \nIn addition to numerous on-campus performances\, the TUJB has performed many times at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and performs each spring at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center. In March 2003\, the TUJB toured Germany\, which included five performances with the Phoenix Foundation Jazz Band. One of Tar Baby’s two 2022 releases will be released on Evans’ imprint\, Imani Records\, which he founded in 2001 and relaunched in 2018.
