SUMMARY:Jazzmeia Horn - Jazz Cultural Voices Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:June 1\, 2024 7:30PM \nJazzmeia Horn – Jazz Cultural Voices Concert Series \n $45 \n““Horn is among the most exciting young vocalists in jazz\, with a proud traditionalism that keeps her tightly linked to the sound of classic figures like Nancy Wilson and Betty Carter\, but a vivacity of spirit and conviction that places her firmly in the present.”\n— The New York Times \n“On her poised and pugnacious second album\,Jazzmeia Hornslips free of lingering comparisons —to Betty Carter\, Sarah Vaughan and other jazz-vocal touchstones —by sharpening the angle of attack. Her singing is exuberant\, her original songs reveal a sturdy intellect\, and her message is nothing less than everything the title implies.”\n— NPR Music’s Top 12 Albums of August \n“If nomenclature is destiny\, Jazzmeia Horn was indeed born to swing. Maturing in what is proving to be a renaissance period for female jazz singers\, Horn—who has won in both the Thelonious Monk and Sarah Vaughan vocal-jazz competitions—holds her own as an assured and spunky interpreter of song.”\n— The New Yorker \n“Love and Liberation cements her as the next big carrier of straight-ahead jazz’s vocal tradition.”\n— The New York Times \n

SUMMARY:Steve Green's Return of the Griot’s Groove: The Power of the Drum - Jazz Cultural Voices Series
DESCRIPTION:May 18\, 2024 – 7:30 pm  \nSteve Green’s Return of the Griot’s Groove: The Power of the Drum \n$35 Get Your Ticket \n  \nThe program takes a musical journey through the origin of African American Music while reflecting on the historical and cultural experiences that birthed the creation of this great art form. The Music\, dance and poetry that would rise from the ashes of oppression to captivate and change the entire world. Return of the Griots Groove is American History. Return of the Griots Groove is our history.  \nCombining live musical performances with video\, dance and poetry. Told in the tradition of the Griots of West Africa. We will walk through historical events that took place and the music that evolved as a result. We will focus on the power of the drums as we demonstrate how the times affected the music and the music affected the times. From the guttural moans of despair to celebratory shouts of the hallelujah chorus\, we will walk through the story of the African American diaspora.   \nBeginning with the drums of West Africa. To the slave songs of secret communication. Through the Negro spirituals that sustained. Then to the birth of the Blues and to New Orleans for the birth of Jazz.  Next the evolution of Rhythm and blues and Rock and roll. Then the celebration of Soul\, Funk and the ONE. Culminating in the explosion of Hip-hop. The power of the drum is central in all forms of African American music. We celebrate the pride and achievements of a people who continue to rise above a system designed to kill their spirit and the music that continues to flow from the soul of America. This is the return of the Griots Groove.

SUMMARY:Kirk Whalum Concert - Jazz Cultural Voices
DESCRIPTION:Soulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk Whalum’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, (TN) gospel roots. The 80’s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene––especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nAn ordained minister\, Kirk has earned a Masters of Art in Religion. It’s in this spirit that he serves his community in various ways when his touring schedule allows. There is also his daily fifteen minute podcast\, Bible In Your Ear (BIYE)\, in which he invites you to listen along as he reads through the Bible in a year. In addition to music and ministry\, Kirk has a passion to educate young\, aspiring musicians and is currently engaged as a music professor at Visible Music College in his hometown of Memphis. \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgments for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards-Gospel music’s highest honor. SUMMARY:Helen Sung Concert - Jazz Cultural Voices
DESCRIPTION:Helen Sung is an acclaimed jazz pianist and composer\, and a 2021 Guggenheim Fellow. A native of Houston\, Texas\, and graduate of its High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA)\, she eschewed her classical piano upbringing after a jazz epiphany during undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Helen went on to become part of the inaugural class of the Thelonious Monk Institute (now the Herbie Hancock Institute) at the New England Conservatory of Music. \nAs a classical-turned-jazz artist\, one of the things I have come to love the most about this American art form is its generous\, communal heart: this is music made together\, played together\, and enjoyed together. Tenor legend Jimmy Heath told me (during my studies at the then Monk Institute) the jazz bandstand exemplified true democracy\, where the musicians each had a role to play\, everyone got a chance to shine and have their say\, but in the end they create something greater together than they could on their own. After the prolonged isolation of the pandemic\, getting to play (and hang!) with beloved colleagues and tour again has been a joy and revelation: as Maestro Heath taught me\, we need one another. May we take this message out into the jazz venues of our nation\, and the world. \nHelen Sung newest album Quartet+ (Sunnyside Records)\, garnered a 4.5 star DownBeat review and inclusion in its “Best of 2021 Albums” list\, and a JazzTimes cover story (January 2022 issue)\, while previous releases Sung With Words (Stricker Street)\, a collaborative project with renowned poet Dana Gioia\, and Anthem For A New Day (Concord Jazz) topped the jazz charts. In addition to her own band\, Helen has performed with such luminaries as the late Clark Terry\, Wayne Shorter\, Ron Carter\, Wynton Marsalis\, Regina Carter\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, Cecile McLorin Salvant\, and the Mingus Big Band. Recent activities of note include Re-Orientation: Asian American Artists Out Loud (made possible by a Chamber Music America Digital Residency grant): provoked by anti-Asian violence\, Helen teamed her quartet with a poet\, a hip-hop artist/rapper\, and an installation artist in a series of interdisciplinary events to celebrate the range and diversity of Asian American artistry. Helen’s 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship is being applied toward a mutli-movement composition for big band; one of the movements\, “Wayne’s World\,” won the 2022 BMI Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize. Helen has served on the jazz faculties of the Berklee College of Music and the Juilliard School. She is currently visiting faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music\, and an Associate Professor at Columbia University\, where she also was the inaugural jazz artist-in-residence at its Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute exploring the intersection of jazz and neuroscience. Helen is a Steinway Artist.

SUMMARY:*FREE* PCC MasterClass Series - Helen Sung
DESCRIPTION:Finding A Voice Through Jazz Composition \n\n\n\nDespite growing up in a family culture that valued deference and “real jobs\, Chinese-American pianist/composer Helen Sung had secret dreams of becoming a concert pianist. Helen went on to graduate from the Thelonious Monk Institute (now renamed the Herbie Hancock Institute) of Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory\, where bass legend and Artistic Director Ron Carter required her and her fellow classmates to regularly write original music\, saying\, “If you want to find your own voice\, write your own music.” Today\, in addition to a busy performance career\, Sung is also a commissioned\, award- winning composer/arranger. SUMMARY:Orrin Evans
DESCRIPTION:During his kaleidoscopic quarter-century as a professional jazz musician\, pianist Orrin Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist who pushes the envelope in all directions. Never supported by a major label\, Evans has ascended to top-of-the-pyramid stature on his instrument\, as affirmed by his #1-ranking as “Rising Star Pianist” in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll. \nGrammy nominations for the Smoke Sessions albums The Intangible Between and Presence\, by Evans’ raucous\, risk-friendly Captain Black Big Band\, stamp his bona fides as a bandleader and composer. In addition to CBBB\, Evans’ multifarious leader and collaborative projects include the Eubanks Evans Experience (a duo with eminent guitarist Kevin Eubanks); the Brazilian unit Terreno Comum; Evans’ working trio with bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Mark Whitfield\, Jr.; and Tar Baby (a collective trio of 20 years standing with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Nasheet Waits). One of Tar Baby’s two 2022 releases will be released on Evans’ imprint\, Imani Records\, which he founded in 2001 and relaunched in 2018.

SUMMARY:Johnathan Blake and Pentad - Jazz Cultural Voices Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:Johnathan Blake and Pentad\nfeaturing Immanuel Wilkins\, Steve Nelson\, David Virelles\, Ben Street \nJohnathan Blake’s debut release on Blue Note Records signals shifting tides for a career that’s yet to crest. The drummer\, composer\, and progressive bandleader continually refines and renews an expression bonded to the lineage of Black music that fluoresces across Homeward Bound. Warmth of phrasing abounds as Blake layers a sound that’s at once relaxed and urgent. Alongside an innate ride cymbal\, his melodic treatment of the drum kit reflects a generations old understanding of the instrument and allows his compositions to engage the myriad artists who bring them life. \nHeralded by NPR Music as “the ultimate modernist\,” the Philadelphia-raised artist has collaborated with Pharoah Sanders\, Ravi Coltrane\, Tom Harrell\, Hans Glawischnig\, Avishai Cohen\, Donny McCaslin\, Linda May Han Oh\, Jaleel Shaw\, Chris Potter\, Maria Schneider\, Alex Sipiagin\, Kris Davis and countless other distinctive voices. DownBeat once wrote\, “It’s a testament to Blake’s abilities that he makes his presence felt in any context.” A frequent presence on Blue Note records over the past several years\, Blake has contributed his strong\, limber pulse and airy precision to multiple leader releases from Blue Note artists including Dr. Lonnie Smith’s Breathe (2021)\, All in My Mind (2018) and Evolution (2016) and Kenny Barron’s Concentric Circles (2018)\, the latter whose trio Blake has been a vital member for nearly 15 years. \nHomeward Bound features Blake’s band Pentad\, a quintet of musicians whose expressions inhabit that mystery of time and space. Pentad’s core trio is comprised of longtime collaborator and friend Dezron Douglas whose strong yet reflexive bass presence saturates each track\, and acclaimed Cuban-born keyboardist David Virelles on piano\, Rhodes and Minimoog. Blake’s Blue Note label mates Immanuel Wilkins and Joel Ross complete the multigenerational quintet on alto saxophone and vibraphone. Though distinct in their expressions\, the rising star artists share a cooperative quality intrinsic to their improvising. \n“The name represents us as five individuals coming together for a common cause: trying to make the most honest music as possible\,” says Blake who assembled the band with the intention of composing for a fuller\, more explicit chordal sound than his past projects have featured. The result is a wildly intuitive\, tight sound that embraces spontaneity and relies on trust. \n“I think the sound also comes from years of Dezron and David and me playing together\, and the whole history of Immanuel and me knowing each other from the Philly days\, and then Immanuel’s hookup with Joel.” Even Blake and Ross had their own hookup going before forming Pentad from a Jazz Gallery commission the leader received several years earlier. “There’s a bit of history with everybody in the group\, so when we come to play together\, it’s a unique band sound.” \nOpening with a tender foundational gesture from Douglas\, the album’s title track celebrates the short effervescent life of Ana Grace Marquez-Greene. Daughter of saxophonist Jimmy Greene and flautist Nelba Marquez-Greene\, Ana Grace perished in the Sandy Hook tragedy nearly a decade ago. For Blake\, who recalls the moment of her birth\, Ana Grace’s time on earth resonates. “When little Ana was born\, I remember what a blessing she was\,” says Blake\, who was on the road with Greene at the time in Tom Harrell’s band. “She had such a lively presence. So when I heard she’d been taken away\, it affected me and I started writing this tune.”
