SUMMARY:Steve Green: 2026 Return of the Griot's Groove - Jazz Cultural Voices
DESCRIPTION:Steve Green: 2026 Return of the Griot’s Groove – Jazz Cultural Voices\nPNC Arts Alive Jazz Cultural Voices Series is proud to present celebrated bassist Steve Green to the Philadelphia Clef Club stage for his immersive Return of Griot’s Groove program. Steve will lead the Clef Club audience through a musical journey through the origin of African American Music while reflecting on the historical and cultural experiences that birthed the creation of this great art form. \nPhiladelphia native Steve Green is a celebrated bassist whose career spans decades of collaboration with some of music’s greatest legends\, including Patti LaBelle\, Lou Rawls\, Phyllis Hyman\, and Teddy Pendergrass. From his early beginnings playing Latin rhythms with Santa Fe at age 14 to becoming the house bassist for Philadelphia International Records\, Green’s journey has been one of exploration\, innovation\, and deep spiritual connection to sound. Influenced by the transcendent power of John Coltrane and his work with artists such as Dexter Wansel and the Tony Williams Lifetime Band\, Green’s playing reflects both technical mastery and heartfelt expression.\nGreen now channels this wealth of experience into his visionary project\, Return of Griot’s Groove—a multimedia celebration of African American music and its roots in the traditions of West African Griots. Through live performances\, storytelling\, dance\, and video\, the program traces the evolution of Black music from the primal drumbeats of Africa to the spirituals\, blues\, jazz\, soul\, funk\, and hip-hop that have shaped global culture. It’s more than a concert—it’s a journey through history\, sound\, and spirit\, illuminating how music became both a voice of survival and a beacon of resilience. \nReturn of Griot’s Groove stands as a testament to the enduring power of African American artistry. It celebrates the rhythms\, stories\, and spiritual resilience that have defined centuries of cultural evolution. Whether you come for the music\, the message\, or the movement\, you’ll leave uplifted—reminded that the groove of the Griot still lives on\, connecting past and present through the universal language of sound. \n

SUMMARY:Harold Smith\, Didgeridoo with Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble - Jazz Cultural Voices
DESCRIPTION:PNC Arts Alive Jazz Cultural Voices Series is extremely proud to present a unique performance featuring celebrated didgeridoo player Harold E. Smith with accompaniment by Philadelphia’s own Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble.  \nMt. Airy’s own Harold E. Smith has carved out a rare and remarkable niche as Philadelphia’s premier didgeridoo player—perhaps the only one. The didgeridoo\, an ancient Aboriginal instrument traditionally made from eucalyptus hollowed by termites\, produces a deep\, resonant tone that Smith transforms into an astonishing range of sound: meditative drones\, pulsing rhythms\, even playful barks. \nA lifelong jazz musician\, Smith discovered the didgeridoo nearly three decades ago\, blending world music traditions with the improvisational spirit of jazz. His performances have taken him from Philadelphia’s Sedgwick Cultural Center to collaborations with acclaimed artists such as Byard Lancaster\, Steve Turre\, and Badal Roy. His self-released album\, In the Valley of Sacred Sound\, earned praise from DownBeat magazine for the “surprising versatility” of his didgeridoo sound—at once earthy\, spiritual\, and sonically rich. \nOriginally from Pittsburgh\, Smith began as a jazz drummer\, studying with the legendary Elvin Jones and performing alongside innovators like Sam Rivers and Joe McPhee during New York’s avant-garde loft era. A knee injury in the early 1990s ended his drumming career but opened the door to a new creative path. The didgeridoo became his voice—an instrument through which he channels both ancient traditions and contemporary jazz innovation. \nToday\, Harold E. Smith’s performances are more than concerts—they are transcendent journeys into rhythm\, sound\, and spirit. Smith\, along with Apreggio\, will fill the Clef Club stage with boundless musical energy and will undoubtedly immerse you in the soul and very essence of contemporary jazz innovation.  \nTICKETS HERE

SUMMARY:Vijay Iyer - Jazz Cultural Voices Concert Series 2025
DESCRIPTION:THE VIJAY IYER TRIO \n  \nComposer-pianist VIJAY IYER has carved out a unique path as an influential\, shape-shifting presence in 21st-century music. His deeply interactive\, powerfully expressive musical language is indebted to the composer-pianist lineage from Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk to Alice Coltrane and Geri Allen\, the creative music movement of the 60s and 70s\, and rhythmic traditions of South Asia and West Africa. As MinnPost recently observed\, “twining composition and improvisation is rightfully his most celebrated métier.” He has released twenty-six widely praised albums; received three Grammy nominations\, numerous national and international prizes\, and a MacArthur Fellowship; composed for orchestras\, soloists\, and chamber ensembles; and collaborated with poets\, filmmakers\, choreographers\, and music-makers from across the planet. But Iyer’s artistry finds perhaps its purest expression in his most celebrated group\, the Vijay Iyer Trio\, praised by NPR as “truly astonishing” and by The New York Times as “one of the best bands in jazz.”  \n  \nOver the years this pivotal ensemble has nurtured a remarkable roster of now-revered young musicians. The first longstanding iteration of Iyer’s trio\, featuring bassist Stephan Crump and wunderkind drummer Marcus Gilmore\, became one of the definitive ensembles of the 2010s. Their three groundbreaking albums – Historicity (ACT\, 2009)\, Accelerando (ACT\, 2012)\, and Break Stuff (ECM\, 2015)\, received universal acclaim in the jazz and mainstream press\, each one winning multiple awards for best album\, best jazz group\, and best pianist\, and cementing a place for Iyer in the modern musical firmament. Their repertoire juxtaposed memorable covers of “Galang\,” “Human Nature\,” and “The Star of a Story” with Iyer’s intricate\, soulful compositions. \n  \nIn 2021\, an all-star incarnation of Iyer’s trio with bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Tyshawn Sorey released Uneasy (ECM)\, which was named one of the best jazz albums of 2021 by Pitchfork\, The New Yorker\, NPR\, the Boston Globe\, and numerous other publications. The group’s riveting 2024 follow-up Compassion (ECM) was named one of the best albums of 2024 by The Boston Globe\, The Washington Post\, NPR\, The Wire\, and The Denver Post\, and was hailed by Forbes as “a masterful work that overflows with beauty\, feeling\, warmth and sensitivity.” These two discs are the work of an ensemble that bears some resemblance to that earlier band—retaining Iyer’s attraction to dark colors\, elliptical shapes\, and plunging momentum—but there’s a more pronounced expression of equal say among the musicians\, along with a powerful sense of shared purpose and a stratospheric level of attunement. The two newer recordings are also\, in their titular implications and references\, more overtly political\, featuring Iyer’s compositions “Children of Flint\,” “Combat Breathing\,” and the memorial tributes “Arch” (for Archbishop Desmond Tutu)\, and “It Goes” (for Emmett Till). \n  \nIyer’s ever-evolving trio conception\, developed over 30 years with an enviable roster of state-of-the-art bassists and drummers\, finds inspiration in the trio music of Ahmad Jamal\, the Ellington/Mingus/Roach summit Money Jungle\, Andrew Hill’s Smokestack\, McCoy Tyner’s 1970s ensembles\, the rhythm-section alchemies of James Brown\, Fela Kuti\, and the Meters\, South Asian rhythmic forms\, and the expressive nuance of chamber music. The results\, over the span of his trio’s five pivotal recordings and hundreds of performances\, have not only defied the old categories\, but created entirely new ones.

SUMMARY:Steve Turre - Jazz Cultural Voices Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:October 3\, 2024 7:30PM \nSteve Turre – Jazz Cultural Voices Concert Series\n \n $35\n \nSteve Turre at the Clef! \nOne of the world’s preeminent jazz innovators\, trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre\, has consistently won both the Readers’ and Critics’ polls in JazzTimes\, Downbeat\, and Jazziz for Best Trombone and for Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist (shells). Turre was born to Mexican-American parents and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area where he absorbed daily doses of mariachi\, blues and jazz. While attending Sacramento State University\, he joined the Escovedo Brothers salsa band\, which began his career-long involvement with that genre. \nIn 1972 Steve Turre’s career picked up momentum when Ray Charles hired him to go on tour. A year later Turre’s mentor Woody Shaw brought him into Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. After his tenure with Blakey\, Turre went on to work with a diverse list of musicians from the jazz\, Latin\, and pop worlds\, including Dizzy Gillespie\, McCoy Tyner\, J.J. Johnson\, Herbie Hancock\, Lester Bowie\, Tito Puente\, Mongo Santamaria\, Van Morrison\, Pharoah Sanders\, Horace Silver\, Max Roach\, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The latter introduced hum to the seashell as an instrument. Soon after that\, while touring in Mexico City with Woody Shaw\, Turre’s relatives informed him that his ancestors similarly played the shells. Since then\, Turre has incorporated seashells into his diverse musical style. \nIn addition to performing as a member of the Saturday Night Live Band since 1984\, Turre leads several different ensembles. Sanctified Shells utilizes the seashell in a larger context\, transforming his horn section into a “shell choir”. Turre’s Spring 1999 Verve release\, Lotus Flower\, showcases his Sextet With Strings. The recording explores many great standards and original compositions arranged by Turre for a unique instrumentation of trombone and shells\, violin\, cello\, piano\, bass and drums. Turre’s quartet and quintet provide a setting based in tradition and stretching the limits conceptually and stylistically. In the Summer of 2000\, Telarc released In The Spur of the Moment. This recording features Steve with three different quartets\, each with a different and distinct master pianist: Ray Charles\, Chucho Valdes\, and Stephen Scott. \nTurre’s self-titled Verve release pioneers a unique artistic vision\, drawing upon jazz\, Afro-Cuban\, and Brazilian sources. This innovative recording also features Cassandra Wilson\, Randy Brecker\, Graciela\, Mongo Santamaria and J.J. Johnson. Previously Turre recorded Right There and Rhythm Within\, featuring Herbie Hancock\, Jon Faddis\, Pharoah Sanders\, and Sanctified Shells\, on Verve’s subsidiary label\, Antilles. \nSteve Turre continually evolves as a musician and arranger. He has a strong command of all musical genres and when it comes to his distinct brand of jazz\, he always keeps one foot in the past and one in the future.

SUMMARY:Jazzmeia Horn - Jazz Cultural Voices Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:June 1\, 2024 7:30PM \nJazzmeia Horn – Jazz Cultural Voices Concert Series \n $45 \n““Horn is among the most exciting young vocalists in jazz\, with a proud traditionalism that keeps her tightly linked to the sound of classic figures like Nancy Wilson and Betty Carter\, but a vivacity of spirit and conviction that places her firmly in the present.”\n— The New York Times \n“On her poised and pugnacious second album\,Jazzmeia Hornslips free of lingering comparisons —to Betty Carter\, Sarah Vaughan and other jazz-vocal touchstones —by sharpening the angle of attack. Her singing is exuberant\, her original songs reveal a sturdy intellect\, and her message is nothing less than everything the title implies.”\n— NPR Music’s Top 12 Albums of August \n“If nomenclature is destiny\, Jazzmeia Horn was indeed born to swing. Maturing in what is proving to be a renaissance period for female jazz singers\, Horn—who has won in both the Thelonious Monk and Sarah Vaughan vocal-jazz competitions—holds her own as an assured and spunky interpreter of song.”\n— The New Yorker \n“Love and Liberation cements her as the next big carrier of straight-ahead jazz’s vocal tradition.”\n— The New York Times \n

SUMMARY:Kirk Whalum Concert - Jazz Cultural Voices
DESCRIPTION:Soulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk Whalum’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, (TN) gospel roots. The 80’s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene––especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nAn ordained minister\, Kirk has earned a Masters of Art in Religion. It’s in this spirit that he serves his community in various ways when his touring schedule allows. There is also his daily fifteen minute podcast\, Bible In Your Ear (BIYE)\, in which he invites you to listen along as he reads through the Bible in a year. In addition to music and ministry\, Kirk has a passion to educate young\, aspiring musicians and is currently engaged as a music professor at Visible Music College in his hometown of Memphis. \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgments for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards-Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy® Award nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy® Award (2011) for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”––featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters. Kirk has also been honored with a Brass Note on the Memphis Walk of Fame and a Star on the Nashville Walk of Fame. \nIn a career spanning decades\, Kirk has a sound that is uniquely his; it is a sound that leaves an indelible imprint on the listener.

SUMMARY:Helen Sung Concert - Jazz Cultural Voices
DESCRIPTION:Helen Sung is an acclaimed jazz pianist and composer\, and a 2021 Guggenheim Fellow. A native of Houston\, Texas\, and graduate of its High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA)\, she eschewed her classical piano upbringing after a jazz epiphany during undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Helen went on to become part of the inaugural class of the Thelonious Monk Institute (now the Herbie Hancock Institute) at the New England Conservatory of Music. \nAs a classical-turned-jazz artist\, one of the things I have come to love the most about this American art form is its generous\, communal heart: this is music made together\, played together\, and enjoyed together. Tenor legend Jimmy Heath told me (during my studies at the then Monk Institute) the jazz bandstand exemplified true democracy\, where the musicians each had a role to play\, everyone got a chance to shine and have their say\, but in the end they create something greater together than they could on their own. After the prolonged isolation of the pandemic\, getting to play (and hang!) with beloved colleagues and tour again has been a joy and revelation: as Maestro Heath taught me\, we need one another. May we take this message out into the jazz venues of our nation\, and the world. \nHelen Sung newest album Quartet+ (Sunnyside Records)\, garnered a 4.5 star DownBeat review and inclusion in its “Best of 2021 Albums” list\, and a JazzTimes cover story (January 2022 issue)\, while previous releases Sung With Words (Stricker Street)\, a collaborative project with renowned poet Dana Gioia\, and Anthem For A New Day (Concord Jazz) topped the jazz charts. In addition to her own band\, Helen has performed with such luminaries as the late Clark Terry\, Wayne Shorter\, Ron Carter\, Wynton Marsalis\, Regina Carter\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, Cecile McLorin Salvant\, and the Mingus Big Band. Recent activities of note include Re-Orientation: Asian American Artists Out Loud (made possible by a Chamber Music America Digital Residency grant): provoked by anti-Asian violence\, Helen teamed her quartet with a poet\, a hip-hop artist/rapper\, and an installation artist in a series of interdisciplinary events to celebrate the range and diversity of Asian American artistry. Helen’s 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship is being applied toward a mutli-movement composition for big band; one of the movements\, “Wayne’s World\,” won the 2022 BMI Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize. Helen has served on the jazz faculties of the Berklee College of Music and the Juilliard School. She is currently visiting faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music\, and an Associate Professor at Columbia University\, where she also was the inaugural jazz artist-in-residence at its Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute exploring the intersection of jazz and neuroscience. Helen is a Steinway Artist.
