Loyola University Graduate Nabil Muquit describes his immersion in the New Orleans music scene

Recent Loyola University graduate, saxophonist, songwriter, composer, vocalist and much more, Nabil Muquit describes his immersion in the city of New Orleans music scene. “No matter what house party you go to, there’s gonna be a live band, Dee-Jay, or rappers, so you always get to see your friends perform and that was something really special for me,” says Muquit.

But it took him leaving the northeast area for him to grow and come into his own. “Being in New Orleans was definitely a lot of fun. I grew a lot just being around so many musicians. I was around the finest musicians in the world, so for someone like me who was “fresh out of the water” it made me work hard to “say something” musically.” From performing with Ellis Marsalis Jr. to studying abroad in Paris, Muquit expressed how his time in New Orleans was surreal, almost like a dream.

Now that back in the Philadelphia area, “it’s definitely a hard thing not being able to see all my friends in New Orleans, but this coronavirus thing has also given me some space to really dive into my own individual artistic expression, Muquit said.” He’s adjusted by just working on his own solo music, playing all the instruments, producing, arranging, in addition to using the time to become a better teacher.

His roots are in the Philadelphia area. “I started playing saxophone at Walton Farm Elementary, got into school wind ensembles, jazz band, All-State band here and really started falling in love with music. I studied with some of the finest teachers in the world at the Kimmel Center and the Clef Club. I even had the opportunity to teach at the Clef Club after my first year of college. I was truly blessed to study in Philadelphia.”

Muquit’s EP, released in May titled “4u&u2” is something he wants the whole world to hear. “It’s a concept album about a boy’s transformation into a man. It takes me back to a time when things felt effortless.”
